The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
